Hello-today a man from Virgin came and installed a new 10mb modem for me. Previously I had received broadband through the cable set top box and the router is sitting by the tv. So now I have the little black box also sitting by the tv, and my question is-does it matter where the black modem goes and is it OK to be by the tv and router as it is connected by a big thick cable to the wall and router and black box are connected to each other. Also, I have always left my router switched on all the time, but this little black box seems to be very warm and this worries me as i wonder if I should leave it on, but I thought you were meant to. Don't really want to ring Virgin as they hardly speak English , and wish I had asked the man but he was gone before I could look round! Please advise or I will never sleep!Advice about new Virgin 10mb modem and Linksys router?
Doesn't matter where the modem is as long as it works although mine sits on top of my tower connected with a short Ethernet cable.
As regards leaving them on, they are designed to be left on all the time. They will run warm but that is perfectly normal. As long as the air slots in the bottom and on top are unobstructed you wont have any problem with it.
The do in fact have have a heat sensor inside them so, if it got too hot it would switch off anyway.
Mine have never been switched off and I have had two replaced in 14 years. The last one that was changed was at least six or seven years old before it packed up and it was changed within 24 hours free of charge.Advice about new Virgin 10mb modem and Linksys router?
The position of the modem and router are irrelivent to the internet connection, the router and modem can stay turned on almost indeffinetly.
I would suggest however occasionally rebooting the modem, just to make sure all is ok. but by no means does that mean every week or even every month.
yeah the location of the modem is fine, but i wouldnt advise having the router next to any electronic devices, and also have it in a high location.
to get the best signal.
and yes you can safely leave both router and modem on at the same time, but you need to make sure your router is using WPA/WPA2 so nobody can piggy back on your connection cause a traffic speed reduction on your connection.
well when you call virgin media techn support its always best to call during office hours, and if your ex-telewest connection you'll get the office in scotland since they are the best team with the best stats.
