The SPCA sold me a young male bird that began laying two eggs as rapidly as 9 days apart, a very weakening experience. I immediately went heavy on the calcium, just as I do for myself periodically (no pun intended). I'm almost sure that ';Birdie Num Nums'; is female or a shemale. But that's not what I wanna know. The veterinarian put her on a terrific diet and recommended that I change its routine regularly: for instance, move the cage to different locations and STOP PETTING IT cause it thinks I'm its mate. Num-Nums hasn't laid an egg for about 4 months, but I feel kinda bad for not playing with it any more. What would you suggest to help me solve this dilemma?Any advice about a ring-necked dove?
First , I wouldn't stop petting my pet because of this. Just take out the eggs as soon as she lays them. It is a she by the way, the SPCA was simply wrong as it is extremely hard to tell the males from the females without observing forever, and knowing what you're looking for. And then you can't be 100%sure (until now of course) without a dna test. If you don't throw the calcium and rich feed to her, she won't be as likely to continue egg laying. Just feed her normally,,,if her body doesn't have all of the extra nutrients for egg laying, she will stop laying them eventually.Any advice about a ring-necked dove?
my dove always laid an egg. nothing wrong with that. feed it a bit of boiled egg occasionally. good chicken scratch also. and i would pet the bird or buy it a mate. nothing should be all alone in a cage with no interaction, and i wasnt offended by my bird laying eggs and liking my attention. just give it some calcium, and she should be fine. byw, dove are very hard to sex, yours more than likely isnt a hermie, its just a female :D
i dont think that it will hurt the bird if it lays a couple of eggs!! i would continue to play with it, well obviously it is a girl bird if she lays eggs! dont give the bird a nesting box or anyhting that looks like it can nest in! this may deter the bird from wanting to lay eggs!
My doves lay eggs like they're machine guns. No problem with that. It happens. You can pet the bird. I got a dove and they don't think I'm their mate. They think I'm their father but I'm sort of supposed to be.
