I am 21 married, with no children. We are not planning on having children for at least a few more years because we want to get our careers started. I have been using Nuvaring but having annoying side effects. Because my schedule is so unpredictable and crazy I have trouble remembering to take a pill at the same time every day. So I am thinking of getting an IUD.
I know not all doctors will give them to women who do not yet have children but mine had suggested one to me before, but at the time the idea the whole idea freaked me out a little bit. Does anyone have any first hand experience with them? I was leaning toward paragard because it is hormone free but since the dosage in mirena is supposedly so low maybe it would be ok.Advice about IUD birth control, like paragard and mirena?
I had the ParaGard for 2 years, and it was very effective for me. The only side effect was heavier bleeding/longer periods (by a few days) and slightly more cramping. Nothing that Pamprin wouldn't take care of. :)
I also had the Mirena for 18 months, and it was the longest 18 months of my life, LOL. It made me bitchy, bloated, broke my face out, and caused me to gain 25 lb. over the course of 6 months. The only good things were that a) my period (after the initial constant spotting for 3 months after having it put in) went away almost completely; and b) it was very effective. Within days of having it removed, I lost 5 lb., my face started to clear up, and I felt human again. I'll NEVER get another Mirena.
I'm pregnant with #3, and will be having my tubes tied. If that wasn't an option, I'd probably go back with the ParaGard.
When my doctor removed it, he pooh pooh'ed my claim that the Mirena caused all the problems. Do your research--there are a TON of message boards out there dedicated to how horrible it is. Then, there are plenty of women who have abdolutely no problems with it. I guess it probably really all depends on the woman.
If you're sure about an IUD, I'd go with the ParaGard, definitely!
