I have a car....an 02 Chevrolet Monte Carlo that was given to me by my dad over a year ago. The car was free, my dad paid for it, and gave it to me. It's black, in excellent condition, etc, and I really love it. However, the car has 90,000 miles on it, and on top of that, some of my friends are telling me that I should get something newer and that will last because Chevrolets don't last that long. They told me that I should get a Honda or something more reliable. I don't know what to do because I am worried my car may break down on me...and I can't afford to have that happen. Any advice? Are Chevrolets reliable? I haven't had any problems, but it seems that people think I will soon because of the brand and the mileage.Question/advice about cars????
Why get rid of a ';free'; car when you are not having any problems with it?Question/advice about cars????
both the 3400 and the 3800 are excellent engines (the only reason GM is still not dropping the 3800 in everything is that its a little too big for most of their newer cars) i had a 04 Monte SC/SS and that engine had a lot of low end torque so you wont be disappointed
my brother had a 96 Bonneville with the 3800 in it and sold the car with over 265,000 miles on it and the guy who bought it drove it for another year before ho totaled it-- it just depends on how you drive it and how much maintenance gets done
Chevy/GM makes excellent, very good cars, but not in comparison to Honda, Toyota, Mazda or even Isuzu. They make all GM care look like overloaded low flush toilet bowls.
But, hey, it didn't cost you anything, so just drive it. Take care of it and get it serviced regularly. Find an independent mechanic. It should last you another couple of years till you get a job and can afford to replace it with something (Honda or Toyota...) that gets good mileage.
Drive safe. Buckle up.
Did stan really put ISUZU ahead of GM? Seriously? Anyways your car is fine especially if you have the 3800 V6 engine in it. The problems with that car(crappy interior, overweight, underpowered without the 3800) weren't really reliability related. I have a 00 Grand Prix with about as many miles as your MC and it gives me no real problems.
Yes Chevy's are reliable. All cars break down given the circumstances.Changing the plugs and plug wires, change the oil and oil filter, and air filter, periodically will help.
Do your proper maintenance, it will be OK. Yes, your friends are right. Honda and Toyota are more reliable.
Take care of it and it will take care of you. Don't listen to your friends, other people are always the quickest to try and spend your money. GM is the most reliable American manufacturer. Actually, according to a late 2007 issue of Consumer Reports, GM was second in overall reliability to only Honda. As for Toyotas, Isuzus, Mitsubishi, Mazda and so on outlasting Chevy, that is not true. Much of the thought that American cars (at least GM) are far inferior to Japanese imports is based on reputations from the 1980s and early 1990s. As long as the Monte Carlo was taken care of and you continue to do so, it should last you at least until 150,000 miles, if not to 200,000 miles or beyond.
Chevrolets are some of the best cars made, that is why many Chevy engines have become standard in racing (namely the Chevy small block V8).
